An out of state organization, aided by a local, well-connected, law firm, is seeking county permission to establish a Group Home under Sec. 33-224(3) of the Miami Dade County Code. Specifically, the out of state organization, seeks permission (commonly known as a zoning variance) to provide 90-day treatment and supervised residential housing for young adults with anxiety and related disorders. The applicant needs the zoning variance because an existing facility, operating under the same county code, is within the code’s geographical exclusion zone. Stated differently, if this zoning variance is approved, our neighborhood will have multiple Group Homes operating in our residential community, impacting the fabric of our community, and become a direct affront to the same Miami-Dade County ordinance that seeks to protect our neighborhoods by not allowing multiple Group Home facilities to operate within a given geographic area.
